I took my iPod apart as I had a problem with the headphone socket and my warranty had run out a few months ago. The charge to send it back to Apple was £70/$129, which I think is a rip off, so I fixed it myself.
It turned out a small screw holding the socket in place had come undone, meaning the headphone jack wobbled.

Opening your iPod case:

What you will need:
- 5G iPod,
- Precision screwdrivers (or anything with a small flat point)
some websites say to use plastic to prevent damage to case,
but i didn't have anything small and plastic to hand.

First, make sure your iPod is switched off and lock it.
Push the screwdriver into the middle of the case at an angle:

The front cover is attached to a metal frame (seen in the photo below).
Along the frame there are 3 metal ledges, on either side, which will help you prise the cover off without damaging the plastic.
They look like this:

The 3 ledge points are in these positions:

Ease the case carefully at the three points above until you can get the screwdriver under the frame at the corners.
Be extra careful around the screen as you could damage it easily.
The top should now separate from the metal back.

The inside should look like this:

<-- Battery

<-- Hard Drive

Replacing battery:

If you want to replace the battery, you will have to unplug the gold flex from the board:

<-- Unplug gold flex

Its easiest to use your screwdriver to ease the plug out.
Then just attach your new battery and press back into place.

Replacing the Hard Drive:

WARNING!
Do not unscrew the hard drive case unless you know what you are doing. It is most likely vacuum sealed, and unscrewing it may damage the drive beyond repair.

The circuit board under the hard drive:

The hard drive can be disconnected from the circuit board by easing the plug out with your screwdriver:

Then just carefully reattach the new hard drive.

I hope this is of help.
